Largest Tomato and Corn Harvest of 2015

The climax of the season is coming to a head and with the large harvests of corn and tomatoes I think that the season is starting to come to a close.  There is always a busy part of the season where I collect the most vegetables and fruit.  It looks like the past two weeks are the max I will get from my garden.

This not only includes corn and tomatoes which I collected this week, but with all the melons I picked around the same time, cucumbers, zucchini, and the pumpkins which I will be harvesting very soon. (more…)

Multiple Harvests of Fruits and Vegetables Today

Rather than collecting just one or two types of fruits or vegetables I decided on picking everything that looked ripe.  This includes zucchini, beans, cucumbers, peppers, cantaloupe, and even cherry tomatoes.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to pick some more corn yesterday, but I decided to wait until this afternoon to pick some more ears.  Most of them should be ready by now or at least ripe enough to be considered for consumption. (more…)

Broccoli in The Ground and Many More Beans

This week was another busy week with planting all 47 broccoli plants I had into the ground.  There were actually a few that were cabbage instead of broccoli and those were planted away from my broccoli.  This is just not to confuse them with each other because they both sprout the same.

Once the cabbage begins growing its head and broccoli plants start creating a large stalk it will become noticeable which is which.  Placing them separately is just an easier way of knowing which is broccoli and which ones are cabbage. (more…)

First Harvest of Corn, Cantaloupe, and Some More Tomatoes

It has been very busy this week especially with all new harvests of corn and cantaloupes.  The cantaloupe was nearly by accident because I wanted to check out the connection between the melon and the vine and when I turned it over it just came right off.  Good thing the melon was pretty much ready anyways.

The other cantaloupe that I picked was coming off from the vine so I just decided on removing it since it was going to come done at any moment.  No reason to leave it on the vine like that. (more…)

Multiple Harvests That Include Cucumbers, Tomatoes, and Pole Beans

I had plenty of harvests today and I could have had some more if I decided on picking peppers.  They were not quite ready, but I will be picking them tomorrow to be used for the tomato sauce that is going to be made with all the Roma tomatoes that I was able to pick today.

I was able to pick all three types of tomatoes which include steakhouse, cherry, and super sauce Roma tomatoes.  There are still many of tomatoes out there and more flowers are blooming on the plants which means I could potentially pick many more. (more…)

Picking a Bowl Full of Cherry Tomatoes and Garden Update

I thought since it has been a while since I wrote a post that I would give you an update on the garden.  Now that all my plants are starting to produce fruit – except for broccoli and cabbage which will come later- I thought today would be a perfect time to take some pictures of the plants progress.

I left off with my corn producing silks which will lead to ears of corn as long as they are pollinated.  With the rain that we received yesterday much of the pollen has gotten wet and there is nothing that I can do except wait for it to dry and try to place it on the silks of the corn. (more…)

Corn Stalks Beginning to Produce Silks

Corn is usually one of the last things to mature and start producing ears of corn that can be cooked or eaten raw.  The very first sign that I look for is the tassels.  Once the tassels are growing that means very soon silks should begin to grow from the stalk which is the start of every corn ear.

Just a couple of days ago I saw the first sign of silks and it just happened overnight.  It doesn’t take that long before they start growing and once they get going the ears will come faster than one would think.  Once they are a good size I will then start to peel back the husks that cover them in order to know when they are ripe enough. (more…)

More Pole Beans the Second Time

The first time I pick beans is always small and sometimes the second time is just a little bit bigger.  That is what happened today when I went outside to take a look at my beans.  There were plenty that had reached the perfect size for eating.

Last year I had plenty of beans that I could can them for the Winter and they kept their amazing flavor.  Hopefully I am looking to do the same thing as long as I get many more beans throughout the season. (more…)

Picked Onions, Tomatoes, and Beans This Afternoon

Today I thought was a great time to finally take out the onions from the totes and set them aside to let them dry.  My onions stems had fallen down a couple of weeks ago and it was good to get them out of the soil as quickly as possible.

I could have taken them out a while ago, but I had been busy with weeding the garden, tying tomatoes, getting beans climbing, and much more.  I had some free time this afternoon and thought it would be great to get these bulbs out of the ground. (more…)

Planted Some More Carrots and Picked First Pepper of the Season

I didn’t have to do much today because it started out raining and continued to rain throughout the morning and part of the afternoon.  When the weather cleared I decided on planting some more carrots.  Some seeds did not germinate when I first planted them so I placed seeds where plants did not grow.

It is common practice to grow carrots twice durring the season and this usually is done with two different rows.  I normally don’t plant carrots twice because one planting is usually enough.  This time not many seeds germinated and if I didn’t do another planting I would potentially have a low yield. (more…)
