Picked Onions, Tomatoes, and Beans This Afternoon

Last updated on

Today I thought was a great time to finally take out the onions from the totes and set them aside to let them dry.  My onions stems had fallen down a couple of weeks ago and it was good to get them out of the soil as quickly as possible.

I could have taken them out a while ago, but I had been busy with weeding the garden, tying tomatoes, getting beans climbing, and much more.  I had some free time this afternoon and thought it would be great to get these bulbs out of the ground.

For now I just took the onions that were in the tote out and set them aside to let them dry completely.  Having moist onions could lead to mold growing on them much faster than if they were dried correctly.  With this warm weather it should only take a few days for them to be dry enough to bring inside.

Onions Drying in Totes

You can see that I removed them and placed them on top of the soil in the totes.  As long as it doesn’t rain they should be fine and be dry in no time.  I also placed some of them on a table and wanted to see if they would dry faster rather than leaving them in the totes.

As for the onions in the garden I will remove them tomorrow because it is supposed to be as warm as today and if I do it early in the morning they will be dry at the same time as the ones in the totes.  I don’t think the ones in the garden will be as big, but as long as they are edible they will be fine.

Onion Peeled and Cleaned

Just thought I would give you a photo of what one of the onions looks like when it has been cleaned and peeled.  Just the first layer of skin has been removed which will not be used anyways.  This is the ideal size of an onion that I like to grow each year.

Tomatoes are another fruit that I thought would be perfect for a harvest today.  They were all starting to ripen a couple of days ago and I knew that it wouldn’t be long to start picking them.  I was able to collect steakhouse, Roma, and cherry tomatoes today.

First steakhouse tomato this year.

Two Roma super sauce tomatoes were just about done ripening.

Only 17 cherry tomatoes were picked today.  I am hoping many more will be ready very soon.

I also said that I would be picking beans very soon as well and that is what I did yesterday and today.  Yesterday when I started picking beans a mean thunderstorm came by and I was unable to finish picking both rows of beans.  I did finish one, but I had to go out today to pick the rest of the beans.

I collected two and a half pounds of beans yesterday and today.  Unfortunately I only got a picture of the beans I collected today.

I also decided on picking some more cucumbers today that I thought were ready.  They were different sizes with two large ones and a couple of smaller ones.  This happens, but as long as they are as sweet as possible I don’t care about size.
