The Last Summer Harvests of 2016

It is that time of the year where the harvests are getting smaller and smaller and cleanup of most of the garden will commence.  I still have a few melons, tomatoes, and eggplants still growing, but for the most part they will not be that big of a harvest.

The good news is that now we are going into the fall where my broccoli, cabbage, and kale can thrive in the cool weather.  I will be soon starting to pick harvests from them.  I will give them another month before I actually start thinking about harvesting them. (more…)

The Last Large Harvest of Pole Beans

It looks like most of my garden plants are winding down and no longer producing any more flowers or fruits.  My tomatoes are probably the last plants that are still growing fruit and I think I have just a few more harvests from them.

My bean plants are pretty much done for the season and today I just picked the last large harvest of pole beans.  It wasn’t as big as past years, but it is definitely a good amount to store over the winter. (more…)

Cantaloupe, Tomatoes, and Zucchini Picked

I was looking forward to picking the first melon of the year and I thought that it was going to be one of my cantaloupes.  I was hoping that my honeydew would be ready by this week, but instead one of my cantaloupes had disconnected from the plant meaning that it is ready for harvesting.

I also picked some more steakhouse, Roma, and cherry tomatoes.  I did not pick as many cherry tomatoes as my previous harvests, but at least I got a few Romas to make up for it. (more…)

Steakhouse Tomato, Zucchini, and Ruby Glow Harvest

I am now getting some more tomatoes that are coming from most of my plants.  There are only a couple that don’t have any fruit yet, but they do have flowers which should bring some fruit very soon.

As I can see it looks like I am getting steakhouse tomatoes along with some cherry tomatoes.  I am probably getting some Roma tomatoes, but I am not quite certain which ones they are.  I would say in about a week I should know if I have any Roma tomatoes growing. (more…)

Getting Tomato Seeds Into Pots

Today is the day when I start planting all my tomato seeds indoors and placing them under lights.  So far I have planted my leafy plants such as lettuce and spinach.  I also have planted some of the more important flowers indoors and now it is time for the first fruit of the season.

This is when the season starts to get a little bit busier with many plants growing inside.  Once I plant spinach outside I can then grow some more indoors under the lights that were used on my spinach plants.  I will probably be planting some more fruits and vegetables under those lights. (more…)

Large Harvest of Corn with Steakhouse Tomatoes

This is just a short post I wanted to write about the two harvests that I had performed today.  It has been a while since I had picked my first steakhouse tomato and my first ear of corn.  Now that my corn and tomatoes are starting to ripen I thought it best to start picking them right away.

If I happen to leave corn outside for too long they can get real tough and it would have been a waste of time to grow all this corn in the garden. (more…)

First Harvest of Corn, Cantaloupe, and Some More Tomatoes

It has been very busy this week especially with all new harvests of corn and cantaloupes.  The cantaloupe was nearly by accident because I wanted to check out the connection between the melon and the vine and when I turned it over it just came right off.  Good thing the melon was pretty much ready anyways.

The other cantaloupe that I picked was coming off from the vine so I just decided on removing it since it was going to come done at any moment.  No reason to leave it on the vine like that. (more…)

Multiple Harvests That Include Cucumbers, Tomatoes, and Pole Beans

I had plenty of harvests today and I could have had some more if I decided on picking peppers.  They were not quite ready, but I will be picking them tomorrow to be used for the tomato sauce that is going to be made with all the Roma tomatoes that I was able to pick today.

I was able to pick all three types of tomatoes which include steakhouse, cherry, and super sauce Roma tomatoes.  There are still many of tomatoes out there and more flowers are blooming on the plants which means I could potentially pick many more. (more…)

Picked Onions, Tomatoes, and Beans This Afternoon

Today I thought was a great time to finally take out the onions from the totes and set them aside to let them dry.  My onions stems had fallen down a couple of weeks ago and it was good to get them out of the soil as quickly as possible.

I could have taken them out a while ago, but I had been busy with weeding the garden, tying tomatoes, getting beans climbing, and much more.  I had some free time this afternoon and thought it would be great to get these bulbs out of the ground. (more…)

Transplanted Last of Tomatoes, Two Eggplants, and Five Pepper Plants

I had ten more tomatoes that were still in pots and continuing to grow, but starting to look like they were becoming pot bound.  This is something to avoid when growing indoors and since they had grown as far as they could in the containers I thought it would be best to place them in the garden right away.

I have over twenty tomato plants that are either steakhouse, Roma, or cherry tomatoes.  I should have more of the super sauce Roma plants than any of the others because I planted all 25 seeds that came in the packet and only a few of steakhouse and cherry.  Hopefully more sauce to be made this season. (more…)
