Waiting the Right Amount of Time to Transplant Spinach and Kale
Last updated onApril is one of the busiest of months during the springtime where I like to transplant my cold weather plants into the garden and into totes. I always place my onion bulbs in totes and that is what I have been doing for years. At the moment not all my totes have onions and I have only planted a few red onions into three totes so far. I will fill up the totes with enough onions by sometime this week at the latest.
While some onions have been planted it was time to start adding my leaf plants into the garden while the weather is still cool enough for them to thrive and produce large harvests. I have six kale plants and eight spinach plants that were able to fit into one complete row. I tilled enough of the garden to make certain that I have plenty of room to add some other plants such as peas, radishes, and mostly potatoes.
I still have other cool plants that are growing outside, but are not quite ready to be transplanted into the garden just yet. Lettuce and broccoli are probably the last of the cool weather transplants that I will be placing in the garden once they are starting to get root bound in the pots that they are growing in. I have six sun king broccoli in pots and a few red and green lettuce plants that need to get into the garden within a month or so. The broccoli should be able to last through the summer because they are able to tolerate the hot summer months.
I also have many plants growing inside as well which includes both flowers and vegetable plants. I have removed all the sprouts that were growing inside the self watering plant tray and placed them into larger pots in order to grow while we wait for warmer weather to place them outside and then into the garden. I have peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, and soon to start planting things like zucchini, melons, and possibly pumpkins.
