Looking Towards Harvesting Fruits and Vegetables

So far things are going good and plants are beginning to produce some food including both fruits and vegetables.  There are some tomatoes and zucchini that are beginning to show themselves.  These are the only two plants that will most likely start the summer harvesting season. (more…)

The First Radishes Harvested

Wanted to give you a heads up on some of the first radishes I picked this year.  This was a vegetable I wanted to try and was something that I could grow during the spring.  Since it has been a cool spring they ended up coming out pretty good. (more…)

Many Things Happening in The Garden

It has been quite awhile since I wrote my last blog post, but weather has not been cooperating and many things needed to be completed before the month of June.  In this post I will fill you in on what has been going on including some updates on my plants. (more…)

Starting Tilling of Garden and Planting First Corn Seeds

It is pretty much the month of May once this day is over and that means it is time for tilling.  This obviously depends on the weather and normally I plan to till the garden in the month of May, but usually not the first day of the month.  This year was a little bit different and I wanted to start as soon as possible. Last Vegetable Seeds for Indoor Planting

Now that I have most of the plants that I need planted indoors it is time to start the two last ones of the season.  I used peat pots to plant up to six seeds of zucchini and pumpkins.  My squash plants are always the last to be planted indoors. (more…)

Radishes and Peas Now Sprouting

A quick update on some of the seeds I had planted in the garden a couple of weeks ago.  Both my peas and radishes are now showing signs of life with some sprouting within the rows.  Let’s take a look at what they look like when they first pop up through the soil. (more…)

Thanksgiving is Not The Same Without Home Grown Carrots

The very last summer plants that I harvest last are carrots.  They have been in the ground the entire summer and most of the Fall.  I like to leave them in the ground because the ground makes for a good storage area.

I have been picking some cabbage lately and a few more pieces of broccoli.  All I have left are a couple of cabbage plants and whatever broccoli I get from now until the ground freezes. (more…)

Frost Officially Ended Summer Season

Just recently we received a small to light frost that ended the season for most of my summer plants.  I did have only a few harvests of the last peppers and one eggplant.  Now that we have had many consecutive days of cold weather the plants are now gone except for cabbage, broccoli, and kale. (more…)

Broccoli and Kale Starting to Come Through

It looks like my fall crops are doing quite well now that I have picked several kale leaves and heads of broccoli.  I only started harvesting broccoli heads a few days ago, but I have been picking kale leaves for a couple of weeks.  Today will be the third harvest of kale for the season. (more…)

Biggest Watermelon Picked Along with Kale, Peppers, and More

Getting the most out of the garden is the most important part of gardening.  This season I think I did just that with all the fruits and vegetables that I have picked and still harvesting.  With the largest watermelon that I have ever grown I think I have definitely accomplished my objective.

I don’t have much vegetables left except for mainly my fall crops.  I have been picking my kale lately and they are growing very large leaves which will make for some great kale soup this winter.  I have been making sure to store them in order to use them later. (more…)
