Harvesting Broccoli in the Summer This Year
Last updated onI haven’t harvested much this season at the moment, but there are many more things that are getting ready for harvest time. Tomatoes are producing flowers, beans are climbing the ropes, lettuce is flourishing, and broccoli is next on the list. It is almost the peak of garden season and in about a month I should be harvesting the bulk of the fruits of my labor.
Let’s start off with what has been harvested so far. I started off with my radishes and peas as the first to be picked for the spring season. I then worked my way to my strawberries which did not last long, but I plan to add many more plants for next season in order to have a little bit longer and larger harvest.
This past week I picked the first broccoli of the season. So far it is just one head out of several broccoli plants that I have grown this year. There is another head waiting to be cut and I will probably pick that one in a day or so before it starts to flower and stops producing for the season.
Lettuce is probably going to be the next to be harvested and right after will most likely be blueberries. Some of my lettuce could have been picked days ago, but I wanted to get them as large as possible before picking some of the leaves.
My iceberg lettuce is doing well and my king crimson hybrid is doing even better. At least a couple of plants are ready for the picking. At the moment I will probably wait on the iceberg lettuce before picking them. I don’t want to wait too long because the heat will get to them very quickly and may force them to bolt and go to seed. I will have to pick both of them before the real heat returns for the summer.
That is all for harvesting at the moment and more will come in due time. For now I just want to discuss an update on my garden progress. Carrot seeds have been thinned out and weeded and they are coming in very nicely.
Squash plants are growing at the moment and they were planted directly in the soil. I did not transplant them this season and will probably take a little bit longer to get any fruit from them. I usually am getting flowers from my zucchini at this point.
I have pretty much staked all my tomatoes except for a couple of them which I will have to do real soon. I also have one tomato plant that has a Roma tomato growing already. This is probably the earliest that I have produced a tomato.
Last, but not least I finished my bean trellis by adding the ropes needed for them to climb for the entire season. Some of them are already starting to climb, while others are just beginning to produce the vines needed for climbing.
