The Season Starts Off With Lettuce Leaves

Last updated on

Cool season lettuce is the first leaves to be harvested this year.  Normally spinach is first, but lettuce is just as good and can be used for many dishes.  It is always to have lettuce fresh from the garden for salads because this way you can enjoy the full flavor of your hard work.

For now I have just picked from four plants which were the first to be transplanted into the garden.  Within a week or so I should have another harvest from the next transplanted set of plants.

Only butterhead leaves were harvested today.

I could have waited and just picked the plant hole, but I like to pick them throughout the season instead of all at once.  The choice is really up to you on whether you want to harvested the entire plant or just some of the leaves per week.

You can see from the plant above that I still have many more leaves that I could pick.  I don’t want to remove too many otherwise the plant my go to seed prematurely.

On the first harvest I like to remove all the older leaves first which are not the best leaves of the plant.  Later I will be picking the rest of the good looking leaves, but for now removing the older ones is the priority.

For now my plants are still growing and I hope to have many more harvests and soon I should be able to get some peas from my pea plants.

My radish plants are also looking good and some of the radishes were starting to pop through the soil and are getting quite big quick.  It would be very beneficial to harvest them soon so I can put them into the salads along with my own lettuce.  For now I will enjoy my lettuce in salads.
