Many Things Happening in The Garden
Last updated onIt has been quite awhile since I wrote my last blog post, but weather has not been cooperating and many things needed to be completed before the month of June. In this post I will fill you in on what has been going on including some updates on my plants.
First I want to start off with my spring crop which has been enjoying the cooler wet weather that has been here for the past couple of weeks. Some of my other plants are not thriving as they should because of all this rain and cooler nights.
My lettuce is still thriving along with my radishes and peas. This was my cooler spring plants that I grew this season along with onions which are also growing quite well without having to fertilize it that much.
Before planting onions I did make sure that the soil was fertile enough for them to grow for a few weeks without the need to feed them except for water.
I did pick some more lettuce this past week and I think that this is the third harvest so far coming from the lettuce plants. I collected a little bit less than previously, but I still have many plants that are just ready for a good harvest. I am looking to pick them real soon possibly tomorrow.
It looks like my pea plants are finally starting to produce pods. They started flowering about a week ago and I went outside today to get some update pictures and noticed that there were a few pods here and there.
At the moment they are not ready for harvesting, but I would give it another week or two and I should be eating these delicious pods for meals. Hopefully they will be a decent size for eating.
Radishes are doing quite well and I think I will be harvesting them real soon before they start to get tough. If you leave them in the soil too long they will most likely become tough and bitter. Let’s hope I pick them in time.
Beans are now starting to sprout in the garden. The good thing about all this rain is that I don’t have to water my plants and it doesn’t take long for seeds to begin to sprout. Most of my seeds have sprouted and I can soon begin finishing my trellis by installing the ropes for the vines to climb.
Corn is also beginning to come through and more of it is starting to sprout. I was getting a little worried that these new seeds were not going to sprout at all. There are some spots where the seeds didn’t grow, but that happens and I think I will have enough for the two rows that I have.
Since today was actually a sunny day I was finally able to stake my tomato plants that I should have done weeks ago. Luckily the plants have only grown so much because of the cooler weather.
I placed the stakes in the ground and now all I need to do is actually start tying all of them to the wooden stakes. This year I am using stretch ties which I find to be the best for all tomatoes. I plan on tying them tomorrow at the latest.
As for my other plants they are still hanging in there and a few have died and where that happened I just planted more seeds. Usually one or two transplants don’t take and I just add some more seeds in that spot so I don’t lose anything.
At the moment the best plants that are growing in the garden are my squash plants. They took quite well and are the best ones besides my spring crop that are continuing to grow.
My flowers are also doing quite well which includes alyssum, dill, wildflowers, and corn flowers. I haven’t placed all my flowers into the garden yet and I only have a few more left which shouldn’t take that much time.
