I think this season was pretty good especially with plenty of lettuce in the early spring/summer along with some new additions including snow peas as well as radishes. Cherry tomatoes were plentiful as well as Roma tomatoes which led to plenty of sauces and salsas. Now it is time to clean up the garden and place straw on the appropriate plants to protect them through the cold winter. (more…)
I would say about now is pretty much the end of the season and all that I need to do is some cleanup for next year. This week I picked the only two watermelons that I planted and some last cherry tomatoes that are still growing. I also had a few peppers that were perfect for picking. (more…)

I was hoping to get as many plants into the garden as possible today, because there is going to be some rain coming very soon. I find it is best to get them into the garden quickly so they can adjust quickly to the soil and get some free rain with it as well. (more…)
It looks like the season is coming to an end with not many fruits and vegetables left to pick. I have a couple of eggplants, peppers, and some tomatoes still growing, but for the most part it is pretty much done for 2016.
The good news is that I have a fall harvest of broccoli, kale, and cabbage to look forward to. I also still have three watermelons in the garden that are going to need to be harvested real soon as well. I would guess that I will be picking them sometime this month at the latest hopefully. (more…)
A couple days ago during a nice warm day I wanted to get in the garden another row of corn and some transplants that I wanted to get out of the way. So far I have been adding a row of corn every five days and I only have about ten feet of planting space left. Once I am done with the corn and all the seeds have sprouted I can then remove the bird netting that is protecting my seeds.
Today I decided it was time for getting some plants ready for the spring. This would include alyssum, dill, and queen annes lace. I grow these particular plants early mainly for attracting beneficial insects such as lady beetles, parasitic wasps, and even honey bees.
I also like to get a head start with watermelons and sunflowers. Watermelons take a very long time to mature and produce fruit. Some can take as long as 110 days. Since I live in a temperate climate I always like to get right into growing this fruit as soon as possible. By the time they are ready to be planted into the garden it should be warm enough for them to flourish
Sunflowers I like to get a head start on is because this is one of the first things I need to begin flowering. The flowers of mammoth sunflowers are perfect for attracting pollinating bees. Whether it be honeybees or native bees these plants can attract all kinds of pollinators. This is the main reason for getting them a head start as well. (more…)
