Weeding Broccoli and More Garden Harvesting
Last updated onI thought I would wait to write a post once I had finished weeding my broccoli and had some more harvesting to share. This would include the last cantaloupe, some more peppers, and again more beans. I also took two days to fully weed my broccoli plants.
After a couple of days of rain I knew that my broccoli would do quite well, but on the other hand the weeds would shoot up like crazy. That is exactly what happened and I wanted to make sure that they didn’t affect the growth of my broccoli plants.
The good news is that I had placed some mulch around the stems of my plants. This was to ensure that no weeds would grow too close to them affecting the roots and maybe stunting their growth.
I will now add some more mulch to the rest of the area surrounding my plants. Mulch will be placed in between plants to prevent any weeds from growing at all. This should last for the rest of the season and I will not have to weed my broccoli plants again.
This is what it looked like after weeding them.
So far my broccoli plants are doing quite well and I think by next month they should be bearing fruit and hopefully a good harvest will come from them.
Now onto the harvesting that I did this week. Well I picked the last cantaloupe of the season and it doesn’t look like their is any more vines that will be producing any more melons. I do have a couple of watermelons left, but they will not be harvested for a couple of weeks. They still have some time to mature.
It had been almost a week since I picked the last harvest of beans and after some really good days of weather I wanted to take a look at how they were growing. Again there were plenty that needed to be harvested and I got another nine pounds. It seems like nine pounds has been the average amount of beans that I collect in one picking. I am not complaining though.
Another five peppers were picked today and they were of decent size. They were not as big as the others that I had picked in the month of August, but still good enough to use. I still have a couple of large ones that are still growing on the plants and many other sized peppers.
Here are some peppers that are still on the plants growing and thriving.
For now I am leaving my pumpkins outside for the moment, but any time now I will be harvesting them since they are obviously done growing. The vines are dead and the pumpkins could be harvested today if I wanted to. I will probably be picking them in the next couple of weeks or sooner depending on when I need them. I like to have at least one for October and Halloween.
