Getting a Little Bit More Blueberries From the Second Harvest
Last updated onWith spring crops ending with little left to pick it is time to move on to blueberries and other warmer weather crops. I am using a summer hybrid broccoli that is supposed to be able to withstand the warm hot summer temperatures. I plan on growing and harvesting them all season long making sure that they do not flower or go to seed.
Blueberries are always picked during the beginning of July or they are ripe when this month comes around. Sometimes they are ripe at the end of June depending on the type of weather and other conditions that affect these berries.
So far I have picked two harvests of blueberries. The first one I did in the beginning of the week and the other one today. The first harvest was a small one and I only got about a pound or so. Today when I picked another harvest I got a little over five pounds. It basically filled the entire bowl that I use to collect them.
Today I noticed one of my onions was beginning to go to seed. I made sure that I cut off the tip of the stem to make sure it doesn’t fully go to seed. This means that it is almost time to dig up or pull up my onions very soon. Usually when the hot weather comes they are pretty much done for the season.
Most of my summer plants are beginning to produce. For instance my corn are starting to grow their tassels which are used to spread the pollen that they need to get some large ears of corn. It will be some time before these tassels have pollen, but I will say by the end of the month I should be seeing signs of ears of corn growing on the stalks.
At the moment I am seeing signs of tomatoes including cherry and Rom tomatoes. I have only seen a couple of steakhouse tomatoes, but I still have other plants that are producing plenty of flowers. They are all small and green, but I should be harvesting them sometime this month if not the beginning of August.
Below are steakhouse tomato flowers that are blooming.
Zucchini plants and pepper plants are starting to produce flowers which are used to get fruit. Zucchini plants have males at the moment except for one plant which has a female flower. Since my pepper plants are self pollinating they don’t need a male or female and right now only one plant has a flower.
