Radishes and Peas Now Sprouting

A quick update on some of the seeds I had planted in the garden a couple of weeks ago.  Both my peas and radishes are now showing signs of life with some sprouting within the rows.  Let’s take a look at what they look like when they first pop up through the soil. (more…)

The Start of April Means Planting Onions and Lettuce

Sunny skies and warm weather means it is time to start planting onions and some other cold weather plants including lettuce.  Although it is the beginning of April there still might be some cold days ahead.  All that is needed is some row covers to protect your plants from a late frost. (more…)

Spinach, Pea, Radish, and Celery Seeds Into the Ground

This week is supposed to be cool, but with high enough temperatures that I can start planting most of my cool weather seeds.  I still have to plant the last of my seed potatoes and transplant my lettuce into the garden, but getting these four seeds into the garden is a big chunk of the cool weather season. (more…)

Early Tilling for Spring Plants and Seeds

I got some tilling done yesterday which is mainly for the spring plants that I will be placing outside.  Lettuce is one of those plants and the rest are going to be from seed.  I will plant seeds of peas, radish, celery, and potatoes. (more…)

Half of Potatoes Planted

Today I only planted just about half of the potatoes that I had ordered.  I didn’t want to plant all of them just in case the weather coming up is too cold and may have an adverse effect on them.  I will try to plant the rest on a less windy day sometime at the end of March, but before April.

Digging Holes for Potatoes and Cleaning up Debris

Since receiving my potatoes yesterday I needed to clean up the garden and get some holes dug before tomorrow.  Luckily it only rained in the morning so I was able to clean up the garden, fix the net that surrounds the garden, and dig some holes for my potatoes. (more…)

Cantaloupes, Tomatoes, Peppers, and Last of Pole Beans

It looks like the season is coming to an end with not many fruits and vegetables left to pick.  I have a couple of eggplants, peppers, and some tomatoes still growing, but for the most part it is pretty much done for 2016.

The good news is that I have a fall harvest of broccoli, kale, and cabbage to look forward to.  I also still have three watermelons in the garden that are going to need to be harvested real soon as well.  I would guess that I will be picking them sometime this month at the latest hopefully. (more…)

Cantaloupe, Tomatoes, and Zucchini Picked

I was looking forward to picking the first melon of the year and I thought that it was going to be one of my cantaloupes.  I was hoping that my honeydew would be ready by this week, but instead one of my cantaloupes had disconnected from the plant meaning that it is ready for harvesting.

I also picked some more steakhouse, Roma, and cherry tomatoes.  I did not pick as many cherry tomatoes as my previous harvests, but at least I got a few Romas to make up for it. (more…)

Time To Make Tomato Sauce with Roma Tomatoes

I collected quite a bit of tomatoes today including Roma tomatoes and cherry tomatoes.  I wasn’t sure if I was going to pick enough to make tomato sauce, but in the end I ended up picking plenty for this.  I also picked over 100 cherry tomatoes again and I am looking forward to eating them.

I also picked a few more cucumbers, beans, zucchini, and more peppers today.  I am hoping to soon pick my first honeydew melon sometime this month. (more…)
