Melons, Peppers, and Beans Coming Through
Last updated onWanted to give a quick update on the garden so far and how many plants are finally starting to produce. Some of the ones I want to discuss include peppers, cucumbers, melons, and beans. I have not mentioned much about my peppers, but now they are beginning to flower and grow peppers.
I also went through all my melons to see if I could find some that have been pollinated and are ready to get much bigger. They tend to grow every single day and you could even keep tract of how much they grow each day. This is something that I don’t do, but I do take pictures of them each day to see the difference.
I just wanted to see if there were any fruits on my melon plants that I happened to miss when I weeded them a week or so ago. I guess there were a few that I overlooked or were at the beginning stage of flowering. So far I have found three cantaloupes and one watermelon.
Cantaloupe #1
Cantaloupe #2
Cantaloupe #3
The last melon here may not have been pollinated, but I am pretty sure that the others have because they are increasing in size each day. Now for the watermelon that is growing on one of the vines.
It starts pretty much the same as cantaloupes and will hopefully turn into a delicious melon in a couple of months. I will need to continue to feed it on a consistent basis in order to get it as big as possible. I am looking to beat my previous season record of 24 or 25 pounds. Let’s see if I can do that.
As of today I happen to find the first bean of the season. It will take some time before I get enough beans to have a single harvest. One bean is not enough for picking. Although I might pick it to have a taste and see if it needs some lime or not.
The good news is that they are getting plenty of flowers which suggests that many more beans could be on the way. As long as I keep watering them and providing them with the potassium that they crave then they should keep producing flowers and beans.
As you know last year I got a boatload of beans and I am hoping to get just as much in order to store much of it for the winter. I still have some from last year and have been using it throughout the year with many meals.
I am also getting peppers finally on some of the transplanted plants that were added to the garden a couple of months ago. I wasn’t sure if I was going to get any because they didn’t look like they were growing well. I just took a look at them today and found that they are not only flowering, but are actually producing peppers.
More cucumbers are on the way as well when I started looking underneath the leaves of these plants. Cucumbers are very easily overlooked because they can hide under the leaves and it is not until they are ready to be picked that you notice them.
