Time To Remove Onions from Totes

Last updated on

The onions have been growing long enough and most of the stems have fallen over which is the first sign that the onions are done growing.  Once they fall over it is time to pick them and that is what I did this afternoon.

It doesn’t take that long to remove all of them, but it can take a couple of days to dry them off.  I like to leave them on a table outside and let the hot sun dry them during the daytime.  I will probably bring them inside sometime this week as long as the onions dry out.

For now I am just going to leave them outside on the table in order to help them dry as fast as possible.  This year I got a good crop of onions and they were definitely good sizes.  I got a few small ones here and there, but for the most part they were about average.

I think this should last the rest of the year.  Last season I grew enough to last almost until April of this year.  I am not quite sure if these onions will last as long, but hopefully they will at least last until December.

I am also going to be picking some Roma tomatoes soon because I have some that are beginning to ripen.  Most of them are still ripening and are not red yet, but I have a couple that are probably ready to be picked right now.

Roma Tomato Ripening

This will probably be the new fruit harvested for tomorrow, but for right now I have not picked any Roma tomatoes.  I have been sticking to cherry tomatoes because most of them have been continuing to ripen.

On another note I am seeing a couple of cantaloupes that are growing on the vine.  One of them looks like it is done growing and another one that has just begun growing.
