Corn is The Latest Vegetable to be Harvested in the Month of August
Last updated onA little bit less than half of the corn this week has been harvested with many more ears of corn not quite ready yet. The ones that I have harvested this year look to be quite good in size and hopefully in taste once I bite into a couple of them. Today was the first harvest of corn and was able to pick 15 ears of corn that weighed 7 1/2 lbs after the husks were removed from them. I think there are at least double that still growing on the stalks.
I also have continuously been harvest as much broccoli as possible even though the temperatures are too hot for them. Luckily I still had some left over mulch and was able to spread it all around the plants in order to keep the soil moist and cool. I also did this with all my spring plants including kale and brussel sprouts. This has proved to be quite useful and the plants continue to thrive and producing more harvests to come.
Eggplant and potatoes are probably the next new vegatbles to be harvested from the garden sometime this month. The potato plants are still growing green so I am not yet ready to start preparing for harvesting, but they are producing flowers which means they are just about done with potato growing. Only time will tell when they are ready to be dug from the ground.
On the other my eggplants have been growing pretty fast the last couple of days due to some heavy rains we have received. They will most likely be next for picking with most of my plants having flowers I should get at least one from each plant hopefully. Right now there are two plants that are growing just one eggplant at the moment and can’t wait to start picking them and turning them into a delicious meal.
All my tomatoes I have been pretty much picking every other day between cherry tomatoes and beefsteak tomatoes. I have only picked a few Roma tomatoes so far, but there are plenty on the plants that have not turned into the reddish hue that I am looking for. Right now I have been focusing more on the other two tomatoes while waiting for my Romas to start turning.
