July 28 Garden Progress Update
Last updated onIt has been a while since I last wrote a post on this blog and I thought it would be good to give you a quick update on what is happening so far. I now have four pumpkins that are growing in the garden and I may have a fifth one coming soon. I have been taking pictures of them so that I can easily see their progress over a short period of time.
As you know my zucchinis are coming in one after the other and I don’t see any sign of them slowing down. Blueberries are starting to wind down and today I think I reached the peak of the blueberry season for this year. Tomatoes are doing good and will be ripening very shortly as long as the warm weather holds up.

Bush beans are also coming to their low yield of the season and will probably start getting more flowers in the near future if they have the proper care. Pole beans are beginning to grow like crazy and are climbing up the rope like they should.
Unfortunately the pole beans are now starting to climb over the posts and I need to make sure that they attach to the rope going down rather than climbing up. This can be a real pain, but it is for a good cause because I will get a much larger yield of beans. I anticipate getting beans in the next couple of weeks and they will most likely all come in at the same time.
Corn is now starting to grow tassels which are the first sign that I will be getting corn very shortly. If I had planted them a little bit earlier I might be having corn right now or even sooner. It happens from year to year that yields may take longer to get than other years. It all depends on a number of factors that you don’t have control of.
I am still waiting for melons to come in but the good news is that they are producing male and female flowers which is the one thing that I can take from their lateness. All I have to do is wait for the bees in order to get melons because unlike zucchini and pumpkins that have large flowers, melons have very tiny flowers that only bees can use properly.
Peppers are also starting to produce flowers and I have a few small peppers that are along the way and one of them that I will probably pick tomorrow since it has stopped getting bigger. I have a cucumber that is also ready to be picked and others that are starting to come in.
Eggplant is producing flowers as well and the last time I checked there was a fruit growing from these plants. I am not quite sure since I forgot to check then today, but as far as I now they are at least producing flowers.
Onions are pretty much done for the most part and they will not grow anymore than they already have. Most of the stems have begun to fall over and some of them have turned brown. This means that onion season is over and it is time to pick them from the totes. I will do this very soon.
Carrots are still growing and as long as they continue to grow leaves and get bigger is the only way I can tell that they are producing strong and healthy roots.
So far the garden is really doing good and with only about a couple of months left it would have been wise to start a fall harvest earlier in the month. I planted some cabbage that I am not sure will germinate, but this fall will not be as good as the previous.
